Ammonite Fossil Squid
This Ammonite fossil from the Bearpaw Sea has been transformed to display the creature it hosted over 70 million years ago. During the Cretaceous period Ammonites thrived in the Bearpaw Sea, an ancient seaway which covered a large portion of North America.
Ammonites grew to over 1 meter in diameter and were able to control their buoyancy by introducing air into their shell. This allowed the Ammonite to move vertically in the water column to hunt for food, and avoid predators.
Size: The Ammonite is 10 centimeters (4 inches) in diameter. The total specimen size is 20 centimeters (8 inches) in length and 13 centimeters (5 inches) in height and weighs approximately 2.5 kgs (5 lbs).
